Issues in communication

Electronic communications

Communication through electronic devices or electronic communication has been evolving for decades. The first communication technology device was the telegraph, which was followed by the telephone, the radio, and multimedia. The modern era was marked by the invention of the Internet. This technology is crucial to exchange information and even point of view, among other functions, anywhere in the world.

Telecommunication

Telecommunication networks use communication technologies to transmit or receive electronic signals to communicate with other electronic devices. This can be done by sending data over optic fiber or radio waves(Scott, 2019).

For example, radio waves are used today to send short messages such as words, images, or audio signals between electronic devices such as computers, cell phones, and on pagers. Electromagnetic radiation, like radio waves and infrared light (as used in night vision), are used in the form of radio waves or phone lines (wired telecommunication network) to send data between electronic devices like computers and cell phones, as well as to transmit audible or other higher frequency signals through speakers, earphones, and headphones, over the air from radio stations, and to talk radio and television programs.

The standards used are TM-30 (cellular telephones), SMS (cellular telephones), and MMS (cellular telephones). Although protecting this radio wave and polluting the atmosphere was forbidden, the radio stations use microwave emission, which emits these radio waves to the public for the needs of their radio and television transmissions.

Types of electronic communications

Online communication

Electronic communication is any communication transmitted or stored on electronic media which includes computers, phones, emails, and videos. It is at times referred to as internet communication or digital communication(Elprocus, 2022). Each has its own use and can be used to suit a particular scenario more effectively.

We will look at electronic communications as used in the following types:

Electronic mail/Email messages

Electronic messages (SMS)/instant messaging

Internet search engines

Mobile phone communications

Internet banking

Teleconferences Meetings/video conferencing

While it is true that the internet is often used directly for communication and that internet communications have become a primary way of communicating with each other and with people from different cultures and different places especially through social network sites, it is also true that email may be mostly a means of communicating with your immediate contacts, not with the world at large.

How do you feel about electronic communication

How do you feel about electronic communication

My opinion in regards to communicating through electronic devices is really honest because I think that on a broader scale, people are forgetting how to communicate with one another in a one-on-one setting and more to a nonverbal communication way through using digital communications such as mobile phones. I have seen and heard many people have negative views of our generation due to technological communication.

For effective communication to occur, I think that the only way to communicate any type of positive or negative sentiment is to communicate face-to-face at some point in your day. If you could change one thing about society today what would it be Would it be my self-esteem problems?

Since I never had friends growing up, I didn't have any friends as I grew up. I feel like having friends is kind of a prerequisite to being successful. I feel like I just haven't had the right people in my life to do that. Do you think your work ethic is different than a lot of people's anymore?

I think my work ethic is the same as it was twenty years ago. I think that I'm probably more disciplined now than I was, but it has mostly to do with the fact that I look back at what I used to do and I realize how much I used to work and how much I did while being in a bad mood or while being tired or while being distracted or while having a lack awful day.

Back then, I didn't have any thoughts about what I was doing. I was just like, "I'm tired, I want to go home, I want to eat a sweet potato." I don't know. It's just something I figured out a long time ago. [laughs] I don't know how I did two hours a day for ten years. [laughs]

Is it easier than communicating with someone face to face?

face-to-face communication

Is it easier than communicating with someone face to face? Sometimes yes, other times no. The difference is largely culture, location, and device. There are differing opinions on whether talking to someone through technology is easier or harder than human interaction.

For the most part, it depends on the person. If it works for you and your loved one, don't hesitate to try using it. It’s a bit like dark chocolate mid-divorce chocolate. Try it and see. I (and other smart people!) think that it's a fabulous treatment to be more connected to your life. Technology can be a tempting shortcut, but it will never be constant. It’s almost like putting your life in mom and dad’s care one night a week.

Sometimes we need that... not as much as we want to, but it beats the alternative. What can you/ should you do? Have some real conversations with mom and dad. Then watch how they cope with the conversations instead of being a pseudo-maternal with endless recipes, endless flashlights, and endless “helpful” advice.

The pros and cons of online communication

The pros and cons of communicating electronically are often misconstrued. Communication is a two-way street and at the end of the day, it’s just as easy to send a paper letter. It takes commitment, a schedule, and more effort, but the person on the other end no longer needs to worry about distractions while they write your letter. And they know they’re hearing from you, too.

How to write the perfect letter How to write the perfect letter. A good turn of phrase. Saying the right things. Not sending handwritten letters. Even if it was dictated. The right amount of writing. The right content.

The Pros of communicating electronically

The pros of communicating electronically versus in person have been debated for a long time. Although text messages (instant messaging), Skype, and other mediums provide convenience, there are a wide variety of meaningful social and interpersonal responses to communicating with other people that can't be emulated by any communication tool.

By the same argument, we might say the benefits gained from in-person meetings, training sessions, etc. are limited by their face-to-face nature. As technology advances, some argue that the need for face-to-face communication is on the decline.

On the other hand, a recent study found that the benefits gained from in-person interactions, such as improved learning, or stronger relationships, outweigh the costs of people commuting to work in an inter-city area. At most, these benefits are a diminishing return as technology advances.

The cons of communicating electronically

The cons of communicating electronically

The cons of communicating electronically are the opposite of what the positive psychology movement proclaims. With the ubiquity of text messaging, instant messenger, email, and Facebook, people generally tend to be more negative.

Many of the research articles on communication through sending instant messages highlight the detrimental and negative effects of communicating in this way. Some of the research points to the fact that sending more text messages back and forth leads to more conflict as well as increased parasocial interaction(Rasmussen, 2018)

The first research article found that couples who communicated via SMS messages reported more dissatisfaction with the relationship, with higher levels of conflict overall and ending in greater numbers of arguments. Another participant who asked his romantic partner to send him messages after 9 pm to discuss his day reported that their quality was lower than face-to-face discussions and that the conversations were becoming increasingly more argumentative and negative.

Another study points to the idea that therapists should not assume that clients are communicating well without actually observing them, or even recording their communication. Certain clients may have other motivations for communicating via text or even other ways such as writing instead of speaking.
